“Best Transdisciplinary Talk” award for CL researcher Miaomiao Tian at the 14th Annual SCCS-NY
Conservation Litigation’s legal researcher Miaomiao Tian took part in the Student Conference on Conservation Science, held on 4-6 October in New York, where she delivered a presentation aimed at introducing conservation litigation to students and early-career professionals in the field of conservation science.
Her talk, titled “Non-criminal Legal Responses - Remedying Wildlife through Conservation Litigation in China,” was named “Best Transdisciplinary Talk” at the conference, and focused on an emerging legal approach designed to tackle conservation conflicts and provide remedies for wildlife that have been harmed.
Miaomiao initiated a fundamental introduction in her presentation, addressing the question, "What is conservation litigation?" She also provided an explanation of "why conservation litigation" from the perspective of types of harm, before delving into its practical application in China. This included an introduction to the relevant legislation, insights into the judicial system, and an exploration of a selected case (Bird Window Collision). This case effectively illustrated how conservation litigation, functioning as a legal mechanism, facilitates the process of remediation for wildlife. Concluding her presentation, she addressed the essential role conservation science played throughout the litigation process.
Miaomiao's primary objective in this presentation was to introduce conservation litigation to conservation scientists and inspire them to consider contributing to conservation litigation in their future careers.
