ARCUS Foundation Support

We are thankful for new financial support from the ARCUS Foundation, a philanthropy focused on our shared commitment to the global human rights and conservation movements. We received support from their Great Apes & Gibbons Program that works to address threats to apes.

The Lancaster Environment Center at Lancaster University received support for its Conservation Litigation efforts against those who participate in the illegal wildlife trade, a major obstacle to ape conservation. This work focuses on enforcing environmental liability laws: powerful but seldom-used legal tools for holding accountable those who exploit apes and other endangered species.

ARCUS support is allowing our network to undertake baseline legal reviews in Cameroon, Thailand, Indonesia and Libera—Great Ape range states where we think conservation litigation can be a positive driver of change. These legal reviews are the first steps towards supporting strategic litigation.
